Legacy Computerized Genealogy Course

Wabash Valley Genealogy Society is offering a free course for beginning users of the Legacy Family Tree Computer application. The course will meet 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. in the Vigo County Main Library computer classroom #2 every Tuesday of August 2012 for those pre-registered at ejmcpheeters@gmail.com. Registration is limited to the first 12 applicants submitting (required) name, home phone, Email address, and home address. Participants will be expected to complete all four meetings with 2-4 hours of homework before each meeting, some requiring internet connections.
Upon registration, applicants will receive added details and the first homework assignment to be completed before May 1st. Legacy is one of only two genealogy programs endorsed by the Latter Day Saints and considered by some as the most outstanding genealogy computer application available at any cost, but the standard version used throughout the course is free with no updating costs or added expenses. The instructor is Joy McPheeters, member of the Wabash Valley Genealogy Society and Loran Braught, founder of the Wabash Valley Genealogy Society, and Life member of the Indiana Genealogical Society.

Computer Skills: Using a Mouse and Keyboard (February 26, 2013)
This hands-on class covers how to properly use a mouse and keyboard - essential computer skills. We will practice the single-click and double-click, and discuss the most used keys on the keyboard. Location = Room A.
Basic Computing 1 (March 26, 2013)
New to computers? This hands-on class covers parts of the computer, opening and closing of computer programs, using the mouse, and saving information.
Basic Computing 2 (April 23, 2013)
More practice for those new to computers. You will learn about Folders, the Recycle Bin, and saving to a flash drive. Please bring a flash drive (also called a thumb drive) with you!
Introduction to the Internet (May 28, 2013)
Familiar with computers and mousing, but not the web? This hands-on class discusses websites and links and the basic toolbar.
Intermediate Internet Searching (June 25, 2013)
Learn more about different search engines, search terms, and using tabs and bookmarks. Please be familiar with the skills from Introduction to the Internet.
Email Basics (July 23, 2013)
Learn about free web-based email accounts and how to get one for yourself. Topics covered include email etiquette, dealing with spam, and avoiding viruses in email attachments.
Internet Safety (August 27, 2013)In conjunction with the Systems department. Learn to recognize spam and scams.
Microsoft Word 1 (September 24, 2013)
This class covers creating and saving documents and includes working with text and spell checking in Microsoft Word 2010. You should already be familiar with the skills in the Basic Computing classes.
Microsoft Word 2 (October 22, 2013)
In Microsoft Word 2010, you will learn text, paragraph & page formatting. You should already be familiar with the skills in Word 1.
Make-up Class/Question day? (Date TBA)
One session to practice what we’ve learned and to ask questions over anything previously covered or any classes someone may have missed.
