VIGO COUNTY INDIANA CEMETERIES

VOLUME I

Harrison, Lost Creek, Nevins, and Otter Creek Townships

This work has been divided into four sections, this being the northeast part of Vigo county.

There are one hundred twenty-seven (plus) cemeteries in this county. There are a few that have their own records, so, we have not copied them. We are concentrating on the older and smaller family sites. We have found several cemeteries gone, being removed to other places due to coal mines, area growth, and larger farm lands.

The reader will notice the township maps have the cemeteries marked whether they are listed in this publication or not. There will be three volumes to follow this, but it takes a lot of fence climbing, chigger fighting, and briar dodging to come up with some of these old forgotten, destroyed, and neglected burial grounds.

This cemetery is north of Terre Haute, Otter Creek Township, Vigo County, Indiana, almost on the Park County line at 117^th Avenue, east of Atherton. It is in the yard of the Friendship Baptist church. It is not extremely old and is still used and kept in good condition. Dates in ( ) are calendar configured.

This cemetery is north of Terre Haute, one mile south of Atherton, Otter Creek Township, Vigo County, Indiana, on State Road 41 to stop 25, where you turn east across the railroad, turn right (south) about 1½ miles. It is back off the road but can be seen through a field, on the west side of the road. It is in fairly good condition. Dates in ( ) are calendar configured.

This cemetery is north of Terre Haute, Otter Creek Township, Vigo County, Indiana, on State Road 41. It is on private property and very little remains, as the road leading to the cemetery has been closed. The original road to the Wabash-Erie Canal washed out and a new road was made through the middle of the cemetery (by the original land owner W. B. Keiger) and tombstones scattered: At one time it had several tombstones, but many were stolen. There are four remaining badly weathered, unreadable sandstone markers. The remaining cemetery is surrounded by a worn split-rail fence and a has a cement statue of an angel, on the farm of Jay W. Dennis, with a wooden sign that reads, “Little Angels - Keiger Cemetery 1836.” Dates in ( ) are calendar configured.

This cemetery is north of Terre Haute, Otter Creek Township, Vigo County, Indiana, as the road turns from Clinton Street into Highway 41. It is in the 2350 block of Northwood Avenue, in the Northwood Estates subdivision. Traveling north on 41, turn left on Evans Avenue - west -(very short block), right on 30^th, and left on Northwood and travel to the end of the road - it is on the left.. It is on land originally owned by J. M. Lyon, which was divided by the Wabash-Erie Canal. It is on private property, in a vacant lot surrounded by a split-rail fence, badly damaged, and in very poor condition. There are supposed to be Indian Mounds at this location - there are other unmarked graves in evidence. Dates in ( ) are calendar configured.

This cemetery is north of Terre Haute, Otter Creek Township, Vigo County, Indiana, west of Clinton Street at Grant Street. There is a small lane that is for cemetery use only, between two homes and along the back of a few others. This is fenced in with chain link and the narrow lane has an old split-rail fence; it can be easily missed as there are no signs. Excellent condition. Dates in ( ) are calendar configured.
