Glenn Home for Children Memorial

On Saturday, September  15, 2007 Lost Creek Township trustee, Rick Long,  along with several volunteers and local residents  held a Ceremony for the  Glenn Home Memorial  Stone.

In honor of those children who lived and died while residing at the Glenn Home for Children in Lost Creek Township, this ceremony was held at the Chamberlain Cemetery located on Maple Avenue just west of Chamberlain Road, which was originally part of the Glenn Home property.   Attending this event were several prior residents, family members of residents, local genealogist from the Wabash Valley Genealogy Society, media personnel and a few prior employee family members, as well as, some seeking old acquaintances and fellow peers or just interested individuals.  This event was in honor of all staff and associates of the home over the years of operation also.

Being a resident of the home myself in the years past, I was eager to attend, not only for myself and my memories but for the memory of a lifelong friend I had made, who was also a resident.  My friend and I had kept in touch over the years, she was my Matron of Honor at my wedding and our children played together on many occasions.  My friend, Terri Lynn Roundtree Woo lost her life this last May.  So this memorial meant even more to me in this regard.

While speaking with a couple of the attendees, I realized that the memories for some who resided there were not as pleasant as mine.  Although, I feel that the Glenn Home was actually a life saver for me, there were those that strongly felt the opposite.    Not everyone adjusts equally to institutional environments and growing up in an institution outside of the family unit, does have its disadvantages.

All in all though, they felt that this memorial finally gave back some of the recognition to those who were outside the realm, those who always felt lost.
