Thomas Hamm will present "An Introduction to Quaker Genealogical Research." It will include a brief overview of Quaker history; an examination of the types of records that Quakers have kept since the 1650s; and guidance on how to go about accessing and using them--in original forms, in print, and on-line.

Thomas Hamm is a native of New Castle, Indiana, and now lives in Richmond, Indiana, on land that has been owned by Quakers since 1806.  He did his undergraduate work at Butler University, and received his Ph.D. in U.S. history from Indiana University in 1985.  Since 1987 he has been on the faculty at Earlham College, where he is  Professor of History and Director of Special Collections, specializing in the history of Quakerism.  He has written extensively on Indiana and Quaker history, including three books published by Indiana University Press: The Transformation of American Quakerism: Orthodox Friends, 1800-1907 (1988); God’s Government Begun: The Society for Universal Inquiry and Reform, 1842-1846 (1995); and Earlham College: A History, 1847-1997; More recently, he is the author of The Quakers in America, published by Columbia University Press in 2003; and an edited collection, Quaker Writings, 1650-1920,  published by Penguin Books in 2011 His current project is a book on Hicksite Friends between 1827 and 1900.   He served president of the Indiana Library and Historical Board from 1999 to 2009.
