In celebration of Indiana’s Bicentennial, we’ll explore how to learn more about relationships, stories, and ideals of frontier life.  We’ll focus on resources such as Draper Manuscripts; land records; 1816 Constitution documents; and Society of Indiana Pioneers records, publications, and programs.  Your own ancestor may already be found on the Society’s website under “Ancestors” or “Pioneer Founders” at http://www.indianapioneers.com.

Jan Aikman Dickson grew up in Terre Haute.  Wabash River boating energized her family before she understood its role in helping form Indiana.  Purdue University history courses sparked discovery of over 30 ancestors arriving in Indiana from1807 to 1840, many in Parke and Vermillion Counties.

Jan is an Indiana “Sagamore of the Wabash” and received awards from the Conference of Chief Justices and National Center for State Courts for founding the national Judicial Family Institute (JFI).  JFI shares ideas on ethics, stress management, and other areas unique to judge’s households and extended family.  She encourages all families today to take heart from pioneer stories.

Her husband, retired Indiana Chief Justice Brent Dickson, works part-time celebrating Indiana’s Bicentennial and helping improve the legal system.  They look forward to solving mysteries in his family tree.  They enjoy 3 sons and their wives and 9 remarkable grandchildren.
