The Untold Story

By Carretha Hale

On Monday, May 14, 2018, at 6:30 pm, Ms. Carretha Hale will present a program for the Wabash Valley Genealogy Society program entitled: “Red & Black. The Untold Story”.  The program will be held in the Vigo County Public Library Terre Haute, IN, starting at 6:30 pm. Doors open at 6:00 pm for refreshments and socializing.

Carretha Hale, lives in Indianapolis. She is a genealogist, lecturer, author, and provider of genealogy research services specializing in the history of Creek Freedmen living in Indian Territory and African American genealogical research.  Carretha is a descendant of Creek and Cherokee freedmen.  She began researching her ancestry in Indiana Territory over 25 ears ago before writing her first book, “From Slavery to Statehood a Family History in the Creek nation”.

During the program, participants will discover the little-known history of Red Masters and Black Slaves. The five Civilized American Indian Tribes were major slaveholders of people of African descent, from the early 18th century to the end of the civil war.  Also, Carretha will explore the different lives of slaves living on southern plantations and in Indian Territory.  She will also describe the types of resources available for researching the families of these slaves and their slave owners.
